About

An independent reference for building in New Jersey.

njcodehub explains New Jersey's Uniform Construction Code and the permit process in plain English. It is publisher-neutral: no firm, contractor, or advertiser shapes what a guide says.

Editorial standards

  • Cite the rule. Guides point to the N.J.A.C. 5:23 section they rely on. 12 of 24 guides currently list official sources with the date they were checked; the rest are marked as overviews until they do.
  • Separate the questions. Zoning, the construction code, and other approvals (flood, historic, health) are different decisions made by different offices. Guides say which is which.
  • Say where the line is. The most useful answer is usually where ordinary maintenance ends and permit work begins, so guides state the conditions instead of a yes or no.
  • Date everything. Each guide shows when it was last updated. Code cycles change; the date tells you how much to trust it.
  • No paid answers. Any future sponsorship or listing will be labeled and kept out of guide text.

Disclaimer

Everything on this site is general educational information about New Jersey regulations. It is not legal, architectural, or engineering advice, and it is not a code determination. The municipal construction official and other enforcing agencies decide what applies to a specific property and project. Always confirm with them before starting work.

Corrections

Rules change and summaries can be wrong. When a guide is corrected, its updated date changes and the official sources list is rechecked.
